Migrating Data to DS4246 w/ Dell R720

What to do when your r720 is full of 30TB of plex? Well, it’s time to look at expansion!

While I do have the RS1221RP+ and RX1217 providing ~70TB of storage, I wanted to not have to worry about expanding my NAS which already is my backup target, reverse proxy, and drive for folders for the partners. The solution? The DS4246.

Things to take into consideration when looking at the DS4246:

  - The most power-optimized setup is with 2x power supplies, and 2x IOM6 modules.

-Plug in both power supplies as well as 1x IOM6 module, as well as you’re lovely QSFP to SFF-8088 cable to one unit, and into your HBA card.

  - I went with the LSI – SAS9201-16e, which works great on Dell units. I have heard the rebranded card that is native to this unit works as well.

And that’s it on the Hardware side! The LSI card should show up in lspci, and the drives should show natively in Linux. In a separate post, I’ll go over Proxmox zfs setup for using the DS4246 as the main storage only for certain volumes.

PS: If you’re crazy and have a 36″ deep rack, know you will need to get some 4″ extensions as the rail kits only go to 32″ from what I have found.

Hi just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren’t loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same results.

Thank you! Just realized it seems to be something with only the pictures being hosted unsecured. I’ll see what I can do to get that fixed shortly.
